Phonemic Awareness, or PA for short, is the ability to identify, manipulate and hear each individual sound or phoneme in words.
Phonemes are the smallest units of sound.
Phonemic Awareness is a foundational skill vital to becoming a good reader.
The tiles allow the student to think about and work with individual sounds, using these tiles makes it easy to teach the phonemic awareness tasks of identifying sounds in a word. PA tasks include adding sounds, deleting sounds and substituting sounds from the spoken word.
The blank, colored tiles found in this pallet, which are used to develop PA skills, are excellent for teaching rhyming. Rhyming is a basic phonemic awareness and pre-reading skill.
Students can ‘see’ the pattern of how words rhyme. Using this tool, will add a visual and kinesthetic experience.
TacTilesPlus allows students to explore and play with rhyme using this multisensory tool.
Phonemic Awareness is key to building a solid foundation prior to introducing letters.
