TacTilesPlus, an Orton Gillingham inspired tool, provides a multi-sensory experience for the student.
TacTilesPlus engages the AUDITORY system by vocal interaction between teacher and student, the VISUAL system through use of colorful, dynamic tiles, and the TACTILE, sense of touch, by manipulating the tiles into words. This allows students to ‘see’ how words are formed.
Multi-sensory teaching gains the attention by activating different parts of the brain. This type of learning has many benefits, creating stronger pathways so that information may be more reliably recalled. It has been shown to improve reading comprehension by providing multiple ways to access information. Multi-sensory learning helps to improve critical thinking. It is known to be effective for all learners but is particularly successful when teaching those with learning differences.
